What is Earth Day?
It’s that time of the year again where you will see the #earthday trending and various social posts mentioning organisational and individual acts of conscientious participation!
But what are they participating in and what is exactly is earth day?
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, aimed at promoting environmental awareness and action. It was first celebrated in 1970 and has since become a global movement, with millions of people participating in activities that promote environmental sustainability and conservation.
The event encourages individuals and organisations to take action to reduce their impact on the environment by adopting sustainable practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and protecting natural resources. Earth Day serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental protection and the need to address pressing issues such as climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction.
It’s one of the few annual trends that pop up that can genuinely trigger a change in someone’s thought process and behaviour that can change how they conduct themselves and or their business practices positively and permanently and so help reduce the negative impact to the planet.
Businesses can make a substantial impact as they have the resources and influence to make a change to how they conduct their activities and that of their employees.
What can a business do to help?
Businesses can take many steps to help promote environmental sustainability and reduce their impact on the planet. Some of the actions a business can take include:
- Adopting sustainable practices: This could involve using renewable energy sources, reducing waste, and conserving natural resources. Companies can also switch to eco-friendly materials and packaging to reduce their carbon footprint.
- Encouraging employee participation: Businesses can encourage their employees to get involved in environmental initiatives and promote eco-friendly practices. This can include initiatives like sharing the daily work commute with someone or using public transportation, reducing the use of single-use plastics, or implementing recycling programs.
- Partnering with eco-friendly organisations: Businesses can partner with environmental organisations or charities to support initiatives that promote sustainability and protect natural resources. This can include sponsoring environmental events or donating a portion of profits to eco-friendly causes.
- Measuring and reporting their impact: Businesses can measure their environmental impact and report on their progress towards sustainability goals. This can help to hold them accountable and identify areas where they can improve.
By taking these steps, businesses can help to promote environmental sustainability and reduce their impact on the planet.
