Naturediet New Packaging Animations
Background
Naturediet is a company that specialises in producing highly nutritious and environmentally sustainable dog food. Their main objective is to create the healthiest and most natural food options for dogs while minimising their impact on the environment. They achieve this by manufacturing all their products at their factory in East Anglia and using ingredients sourced from within Britain.
The Task
Naturediet collaborated with Painting Pixels in order to create a 2D animation in order to showcase their new style of eco-friendly packaging using Tetra Pak technology. Coming into the project, Naturediet didn’t know exactly what style of animation they wanted to use, that’s where we came in!
They chose to use a 2D explainer animation to showcase this new packaging style as it’s the perfect medium of motion graphics and eye-catching animation to capture the attention of the viewer, as well as explaining the packaging’s unique aspects clearly.
Sample
In order to establish a style and direction for the animation, we collaborated on creating a short sample that would be representative of the final video. This sample video wouldn’t contain any storytelling or written content, and instead serve as a visual style for the client to reference and see how the final explainer animation would look.
Here is a video showing the final sample
We chose to go for a paper cutout design for the visual elements, with each graphic bearing a paper-texture, as well as casting shadows for a three dimensional effect. The client was super pleased with the sample, and gave us the go ahead to proceed with the full explainer animation.
Process
Once we moved onto the full animation project, both us and the client decided to work on two seperate video styles. The first was faithful to the original sample, taking place in an interactive paper cutout-style environment, and features a full voice over, with less animated text and more dynamic scenes. The second is more motion graphics on a plain background, as well as no voice over and more animated text.
Video Style 1
For the first style, We first needed to establish a script for the voice over needed. After working closely with Naturediet in order to develop the perfect voice over script to be paired with the animation, which covers all of the points needed as well as remaining fresh and interactive, we managed to finalise the perfect script!
Next, we needed a voice over for the animation, as it would help our artists to create the animation around the voice over, as well as set the tone of the animation early in development.
Once we had the professional voice-over recorded and mastered, we moved onto the actual 2D animation creation part of the production, utilising the power of the adobe suite, we used Adobe After Effects and all of its various tools to create a professional, complex 2D animation. We blended the paper-cutout character and art style of the assets with the company’s overall tone, and reflected on their audience, remaining suitable and engaging for all ages due to the corporate, yet fun aspect of the style used.
After our artists had finshed the animation and post-produciton of the animation, the video was ready to be shown to the clinet. Here is the first style of explainer video for Naturediet’s new packaging:
Video Style 2
Now that the first video had been completed, we set to work on recreating a non-voice over version with a flat backdrop. This version was better able to be viewed silently, such as on silent advertisments online. This animation was a bit simpler, as a voice over was not required, and instead could be explained via motion graphics text, although the story and structure of the animation was the same as the first style.
After production of the second style had finished, we could send it off to the client to see which of the two animation styles they prefered! Here is the second style of explainer video for Naturediet’s new packaging:
Result
Surprisingly, Naturediet liked both of the styles! With a lot of hard work and meticulous tweaks and refining, along with a careful perfecting process with Naturediet, as well as finding the perfect musical score to match up with the animation, the finished 2D explainer was ready to be distributed to all of Naturediets platforms, and they, like us, were delighted with the results!
This was a learning experience for us too, we learned all about the ins and outs of dogfood, what it contains, and the innovative design of Naturediet’s packaging.
