Eastern Angles Theatre Welcome Back Animation

Background

Eastern Angles are a theatre company local to us, based in Ipswich, and present theatrical performances across Eastern Anglia. Eastern Angles provide professional rural touring and site-specific theatre with a focus on new writing, new audiences and the development of new talent.

The Task

Eastern Angles collaborated with Painting Pixels in order to create a concise, instructional video, showing new visitors the new facilities that Eastern Angles has, as well as how to properly enter the viewing auditorium following COVID-19 safety rules. They wanted a visually stunning and engaging way to communicate these new rules and facilities to their visitors while remaining entertaining and interesting. 

They chose to use a 2D explainer animation to convey these aspects of their reopening due to indoor entertainment businesses reopening, allowing these rules to be conveyed to a wider audience, such as children, who may be uninterested in reading rules off of a poster or sign.

Process

Firstly, we collectively worked on an engaging script that is both entertaining and informative, as well as remaining instructional while being conveyed in a 2d visual storytelling format.

After deciding on a lengthy, thorough script, explaining all of the new features and necessary guidelines that need to be followed, we could move onto the basic storyboard necessary for our talented artists to get a visual composition of the story.

Next, we needed a voice over for the animation, as it would help our artists to create the animation around the voice over, as well as set the tone of the animation early in development.

Once we had the professional voice-over recorded and mastered, we moved onto the actual 2D animation creation part of the production, utilising the power of the adobe suite, we used Adobe After Effects and all of its various tools to create a professional, complex 2D animation with a tight deadline of only a few days. We blended the character and art style of the assets with the company’s overall tone, and reflected on their audience, remaining suitable and engaging for all ages due to the corporate, yet fun aspect of the style used.

Result

With a lot of hard work and meticulous tweaks and refining, along with a careful perfecting process with Eastern Angles, as well as finding the perfect musical score to match up with the animation, the finished 2D explainer was ready to be distributed to all of Eastern Angles’ platforms, and they, like us, were delighted with the result!

This was a learning experience for us too, such as the proper methods of social distancing in a theatrical auditorium setting, as well as the amazing new features added to the Eastern Angles Centre.
