In this article, we’ll explore our jargon buster definitions, with a lot of the technical and industry words found within our website and within the design and programming industry. So this article is kind of actually like a glossary. Either way, hopefully, it will help make sense of some of the terms and keyword definitions that we use.

Just a quick note to clarify. There are plenty more digital file extension out there that we will not have time to cover. We are mostly concentrating on the common files extensions and one’s we happen to use. Also, there are many different versions of each file type extension for example (PNG 24 and PNG 32) etc! And we definitely won’t have time to cover that so free to go ahead and do a quick web search if you’re interested in more in-depth detail and back story for these file types. Now let’s get into the Jargon Buster!

Jargon Buster – Graphics based words

The first part of our Jargon Buster is exploring the Graphics based words

Jpeg – Jpeg is one of the most commonly used file formats for photos and images. It stands for (Joint Photographic Experts Group) and was one of the first on the block for image compression. Depending on what digital program you are saving or exporting with; Jpegs have a great range of image compression capabilities without too much loss in quality however severe compression can lead to a blurry and pixelated image. They allow for some of the smallest digital image files types.

PNG – PNG is widely used throughout digital media including photo and image saving. PNG stands for (Portable Network Graphics) and can support large compression rates without loss in data and quality. Most people use this file format including us for the great compression rate but mostly for its ability to allow for transparent backdrops.

Tiff – Tiff is another widely used digital file format used within the professional photography and design industry. It allows for lossless compression all though the file sizes are still big, but does still retaining document data as so saves on document properties so that the file can be re-edited and so is not flattened. This is particularly useful for swapping files among artist who use diffident photo editing programs.

Jargon Buster – Web-based words

The second part of our Jargon Buster is exploring the Web-based words

HTML – HTML is a web programming language that we use to craft your website design with. It stands for (HyperText Markup Language). Currently, the latest version if HTML is (HTML 5) which we use to create rich and dynamic websites. HTML is usually used for front end development and creating the physical structure of a website.

CSS – CSS goes hand-in-hand with HTML. It’s kind of like the decorating stage to a website and is written at the same time as the HTML coded structure. CSS stands for (Cascading Style Sheets) and is used to define properties in HTML code and give them style like colour or weight or alignment etc.

Currently, we are using the latest incarnation of CSS, which has grown very powerful and allows for shading and building shapes and much more. It has in most part eliminated the need to cut up image document files that we designed in Photoshop or Fireworks etc and then place in the backdrop of a website, which would lead to heavy websites. Now, this can be done dynamically from the code making lighter and faster websites.

PHP – PHP is the backend-engine, building code. It’s for server-side programming and so the ‘things’ that the code is used to program can’t be seen as its more of an instruction or command for ‘things’ to do. For example; a contact form on a website is structured using HTML and Styled using CSS and a set of functions and instructions for what it should do is defined using PHP code. PHP stands for (Personal Home Page) well it used to, and then they changed it to (HyperText Processor) yea I know! Anyhow, we build most of our websites with WordPress and use PHP to code the back-end functions.

Jargon Buster – 3D animation based words

The third part of our Jargon Buster is exploring the 3D animation based words

Animation – Animation is the process of movement. We mostly use it for our 3D and 2D animation processes. The animation is the sequences of moving images that make up a displayed motion. We tend to create and export our 2D and 3D animations out at 25 frames per second or (25 FPS) this is basically 25 separate images that are slightly different from the last. We string them together and once all are played back we get a second of motion or an illusion of motion, which we call animation.

CGI – CGI is basically our specialist area and stands for (Computer Generated Imagery). So all of our animations that you see across the Painting Pixels website are CGI animations, which were created digitally and exported at resolutions of HD, 4K and higher. However, CGI is more commonly referred to within the 3D animation industry where the animations are created in 3-dimensions with a 3d environment and with 3d characters etc instead of 2d graphics, which technically are also computer-generated images.

Jargon Buster – Mobile format based words

The final part of our Jargon Buster is exploring the Mobile format based words

IOS – As you can see within our mobile application development sections of our website we mention that we develop for iOS. What do we mean by that? Well, iOS is the mobile operating system created by Apple for Apple mobile devices. It the system that runs your iPhone and iPad. But not your Mac Book or iMac. They have a different system for that currently called OSx.

Android – As above with the iOS operating system. Android in also a mobile operating system created by Google for their mobile devices including smart phones and tablets. We can also build apps for this system type.

    Bespoke 3D Logo Design

    I needed a logo created for my new company. I didn’t want just any old bog standard 2D logo from your everyday graphic designers. I needed a premium 3D logo, which had great detail and depth.     3D Explainer Animation for Trade Show

    Fantastic service and communication! We wanted to exhibit our SEO services at a large internet convention. However due to our line of work, we didn’t have many images or graphics, which would help attract attention from the passerby. We wanted a way to demonstrate our services which mainly deals with statistics, web rankings and PPC and wanted a way to show off these services in a more visual manner. I needed to have a web presence immediately as I would have an article which was to be published and released the following day.     Would Recommend Every time! I wanted a fantastic looking set logos which would both be corporate and not too corporate at the same time.     Interactive Real-time Car App

    Fantastic Technology and Vision! We are a company which uses that latest in modern technology and design to create our extraordinary super cars. We needed a way to demonstrate particular features and to demonstrate also how specific features like the unique door system would open. Originally we were going to go for a standard 3D animation as we did not know about the 4d technology. We searched around for many different 3d design companies and Painting Pixels quality of work caught our eye. After a detailed meeting we were delighted to learn that they can offer exactly what we actually wanted which was indeed 4D animation. They created an Application for us which allowed us to rotate our new super car with the mouse which meant that we could precisely see how the car looks from every angle. Also the 4D allows us to zoom in and see how the more intricate design features worked. We are delight to have met with Painting Pixels as they had the vision to see beyond what we asked for and offered us a better solution to our problem and so gave us exactly what we wanted.     Great Design work! We needed to have our e-commerce website redesigned. We didn’t want to use a common web development company as they tend to have a specific design style.     Illustration of Concept Data in a Beautiful Way

    Brilliant! I needed to demonstrate a concept that I had to add to my book. I created a rough black and white hand drawn sketch but needed it to be created in to a professional illustration.     Logo Design – Your First Motor

    First Class Job! We needed a cool new logo but didn’t really know what we wanted. We looked around at many different design companies and their portfolio and range of work was very uninspired. We came across Painting Pixels and loved their work and range of design disciplines.     Way better than we had imagined! We needed a 3D animation which would clearly demonstrate a unique dredging process and wanted to showcase this at an exhibition. We called Painting Pixels to help make our animation.
