New Mac Pro’s for the Studio
Exciting day today in the Painting Pixels multimedia design studio. Our super shiny new Apple Mac Pro’s have arrived. We have been looking forward to this upgrade as we slowly move everything away from PC and Windows.
Windows Workstation
Microsoft and the Windows platform has served us well over the years and our workstations, which are now ‘up for grabs’ are still no slouch. They still pack a punch and have hyper-threaded CPU’s up 16 Cores. And rock 48GB worth of RAM and dedicated Nvidia graphics cards. We originally bought the system for around £10,000. So definitely not your average PC-World computer.
And so in regards to power and capability the PC’s are still very good and have plenty more life in them; even for 3D animation and rendering. However, we like things clean and tidy and for everything to look like a spaceship and minimal. So Apple wins us over with their design. And as a design studio, you can see why!
Yes, there have been comments about the new design and it looking like a bin. But we personally love it! It’s such a genius design and is super quiet and absolutely tiny in comparison to our monster workstations.
And guess what? It’s a fraction of the size but is still more powerful than the workstations. Credit where credit is due and Apple have done a cracking job with this system! Who says that if you need industrial-scale processing and graphics power you have to have a big ugly noisy box!
The specs on each of our Mac Pros are –
- 2.7GHz 12-core with 30MB of L3 cache with TURBO BOOST
- 64GB (4 x 16GB) of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC
- 1TB PCIe-based flash storage
- Dual AMD FirePro D700 GPUs with 6GB of GDDR5 VRAM each
- Magic Mouse 2
- Magic Keyboard – British English
The accessories are just as beautifully designed and elegant and with no compromise to function.
Anyhow, we are now going to play around with our latest addition to the growing number of Apple product that we have in the studio.
Stay tuned and we will bring a hands-on review and our experience with using the Mac Pro.
